Most course platform roundups compare feature lists. Feature lists are nearly identical across this category — everyone has a curriculum builder, video hosting, quizzes and a checkout. What actually differs is the monthly floor, the cut they take from each sale, and what they meter you on.

Here are the picks, then the reasoning.

The short answers

  • Best free start: Systeme.io — the only genuinely free forever plan left here.
  • Best all-in-one: Kajabi — if it lets you cancel three other tools.
  • Best for communities: Skool — community first, course second, $9 to start.
  • Best for coaching: Podia — coaching, community and a storefront with no complexity tax.
  • Best budget: Teachable — cheapest real course platform entry, with a fee to watch.
  • Best overall course business: Thinkific — no platform cut, room to grow into.
  • Best branded academy: LearnWorlds — interactive video and true white-label.

Comparison table

Platform Entry price Free plan or trial Platform cut on sales Best for
Systeme.io Free, then around $17/mo Free forever plan 0% Starting with no budget
Skool Around $9/mo 14-day trial 10% on entry, 2.9% on Pro Paid communities
Teachable Around $39/mo 7-day trial, 30-day guarantee 7.5% on entry, 0% above Cheapest real course platform
Podia Around $49/mo 30-day trial 5% on entry, 0% above Multi-product storefronts
Thinkific Around $54/mo 30-day trial, no card 0% Course businesses that will grow
LearnWorlds Around $29/mo 30-day trial $5 per enrollment on entry, 0% above Branded academies, B2B
Kajabi Around $179/mo 30-day trial 0% on its own payments Replacing a whole tool stack

Every platform here also passes through payment processing of roughly 2.9% plus 30 cents per US card. Prices and tiers shift; verify on each pricing page before you commit.

Best free start: Systeme.io

Thinkific and Podia both dropped their free plans. Systeme.io kept one, and it is not a crippled demo: around 2,000 contacts, one course, three sales funnels, unlimited emailing, unlimited students and 0% transaction fees. No credit card, no expiry.

That combination is unusual enough to name plainly. You can validate a course idea, collect an email list and take payments without spending a dollar.

The trade is that Systeme.io is a funnel builder that hosts courses, not a course platform. The course player is plain. The page editor is dated. Design-conscious creators will find it ugly, and that is a real objection, not snobbery — your sales page is your conversion rate.

Paid tiers start around $17/month and climb to roughly $97/month for unlimited everything, which is still cheap for the category.

Use it if your first priority is proving demand, not looking polished. Start on the free plan, sell something, then decide whether to stay or move.

Best all-in-one: Kajabi

Kajabi starts around $179/month, which makes it the most expensive entry price here by a factor of three. It earns that only in one scenario: when it replaces tools you are already paying for.

What it absorbs: course hosting, email marketing with real automation, landing pages, funnels, a website, and a community. A working Teachable-plus-email-plus-pages stack commonly runs $120 to $220/month. Against that, Kajabi is not a premium — it is a consolidation.

Watch the contact caps. Kajabi meters contacts, not just products, and a growing email list will push you up a tier before your product count does.

Do not buy it pre-revenue. Try Kajabi when your tool bill is already past roughly $120/month and you intend to cancel the rest in the same week.

Best for communities: Skool

Skool inverts the category. The community feed is the product; courses are a tab inside it. If members show up to talk to each other and the course is the reason they joined, that ordering is correct and most course platforms get it backwards.

Pricing is two plans: around $9/month with a 10% cut of member payments, or around $99/month with a 2.9% cut. Both include unlimited members, unlimited courses and unlimited video. The trial is 14 days, the shortest here.

The math on those two plans is simple. Below roughly $1,200/month in member payments, the $9 plan is cheaper. Above it, the $99 plan is. Recalculate the month your revenue changes, because 10% adds up quietly.

Skool’s weakness is customization. You get Skool’s layout and Skool’s aesthetic, full stop. If a branded community matters more than simplicity, see Skool vs Circle.

Start a Skool trial if your offer is closer to a membership than a curriculum.

Best for coaching: Podia

Coaching businesses sell a messy catalog: a signature program, 1:1 sessions, a workbook, a paid workshop, maybe a small community. Most course platforms make you squeeze that into a course-shaped hole.

Podia does not. Courses, coaching, downloads, community spaces and paid events sit side by side on one storefront with a website and blog attached, from around $49/month.

Two caveats. The entry plan takes 5% of sales, which disappears one tier up at around $99/month. And email subscriber allowances on lower tiers are small — measured in the low hundreds — so a coach building a list will either upgrade or run email elsewhere.

Course depth is deliberately shallow: no cohort tooling, no graded assignments, no certification. That is fine for coaching and wrong for accredited training.

Try Podia if your catalog is wide and your courses are simple.

Best budget: Teachable

Around $39/month gets you a proper course platform with unlimited students, five products, coaching offers, upsells and a short path from empty account to live checkout. Nothing else at that price is as complete.

The catch is the 7.5% transaction fee on that entry plan. On $3,000/month in sales that is $225 — more than the plan above it, which carries no Teachable fee at around $89/month.

So treat the cheap plan as a validation tool with a defined exit. Work out the revenue level where 7.5% exceeds $50/month, write it down, and upgrade when you hit it. Creators who forget this pay hundreds in fees to save $50.

Start on Teachable if you want the lowest committed cost with real course tooling.

Best overall course business: Thinkific

If we had to put one creator on one platform for the next three years without knowing their niche, it would be Thinkific.

It takes no cut of your sales on any plan. Its entry plan at around $54/month includes unlimited courses, a community space and a custom domain. Its middle plan at roughly $109/month adds live cohorts with unlimited sessions, completion certificates, graded assignments, payment plans and memberships — the full set of things a serious teacher eventually needs.

The 30-day trial with no credit card is the most honest offer in this roundup. You can build the entire course before paying anything.

The weak point is branding: removing Thinkific’s name waits until its higher tier at around $219/month, which is late compared to LearnWorlds. And the free plan it was famous for is gone, so do not arrive expecting one.

Start a Thinkific trial and use all 30 days.

Best branded academy: LearnWorlds

LearnWorlds is the pick when the course has to look like your product rather than a hosted page. Full white-label, interactive video with in-frame questions and branching, learning paths, certificates, and support for multiple client groups if you sell the same academy to several companies.

Ignore the roughly $29/month entry plan. It charges about $5 per enrollment and excludes interactive video, learning paths and certificates — the exact features you came for. The plan that matters is the middle tier at around $99/month, which removes the enrollment fee and unlocks them.

LearnWorlds also meters monthly active learners, around 1,000 on entry and 2,000 above. Fine for high-ticket courses, a real ceiling for large free courses.

Try LearnWorlds if you are selling to companies or building something that must not look rented.

How to choose in five minutes

Answer these in order and stop at the first yes.

  1. No budget at all? Systeme.io’s free plan.

  3. Selling more than five small products? Podia.

  6. None of the above? Thinkific if you can spend $54, Teachable if you cannot.

FAQ

Which course platform has a real free plan?

Systeme.io is the only one on this list with a free forever plan. Thinkific and Podia both had one and discontinued it. Everyone else offers a trial ranging from 7 to 30 days, with Thinkific’s 30-day no-card trial the most useful of them.

Are transaction fees worth avoiding?

Yes, above a low revenue threshold. A 5% to 10% platform cut is invisible at $300/month and expensive at $3,000/month. The fix is almost always to upgrade one tier rather than switch platforms, so calculate the crossover point before you launch.

Can I switch platforms later?

You can, and it costs a weekend rather than a fortune. You re-upload video, rebuild the curriculum and sales pages, and email existing students about new logins. It is annoying enough that choosing sensibly now is worth ten minutes of thought, and not so painful that a wrong pick ruins your business.

Do these platforms bring me students?

No. Every platform here gives you hosting, checkout and an affiliate program. Traffic is entirely your job, and it is the hard part. Pick the platform you will stop tinkering with soonest, then put your hours into the audience.

Our call

For most creators, Thinkific is the safest default — no cut of your revenue, 30 days to build before you pay, and enough depth that you will not replatform in a year. If money is the constraint rather than the plan, start free on Systeme.io and prove someone will pay you before you pay anyone.
