Thinkific Review: No Free Plan, No Platform Cut

An honest Thinkific review: the 30-day trial replaced the free plan, what each tier gates, and which creators get the most out of paying monthly.

The headline of any current Thinkific review has to be this: the free forever plan is gone. What you get now is a 30-day trial of a paid plan, no credit card required to start, and then a real monthly bill.

That changes who Thinkific is for. It is no longer the place to park an idea indefinitely. It is a platform you pay for because it never takes a percentage of what you sell.

Bottom line

  • No free plan. A 30-day trial, then roughly $40/month on annual billing at the entry tier.
  • Zero platform cut on sales through Thinkific Payments — you pay card processing and nothing more.
  • Best for creators publishing several courses or teaching in cohorts. Weakest as a place to validate an unproven idea.

The trial is not a free plan, and the difference matters

For years Thinkific’s free tier was the default recommendation for anyone testing a course idea. It let you build, publish one course and take payments without a subscription.

That is retired. The replacement is a 30-day trial across paid plans with no card needed up front.

Thirty days is generous by category standards and long enough to build properly. It is not long enough to validate a product, run a launch, and see whether the business works. If your plan was “build slowly for free until it sells,” Thinkific no longer supports that plan.

Creators who genuinely need zero fixed cost should look at a free all-in-one instead — we cover that trade-off in our Systeme.io review.

What the tiers actually gate

This is where Thinkific gets misread. The entry plan is not a cut-down version of the platform; it is specifically missing the teaching features.

Plan Annual price What it unlocks
Basic around $40/month Unlimited courses, one community space, drip, coupons, affiliates
Start around $82/month Quizzes, certificates, assignments, live cohorts, memberships, payment plans
Grow around $164/month White-label branding, API access, more admin seats, group orders

Confirm current numbers on the Thinkific pricing page; the lineup has been repriced before and will be again.

Read that table carefully. Quizzes and certificates are not on Basic. Neither are payment plans or memberships. If you assumed the cheapest plan includes assessment and a certificate at the end, budget for the middle tier instead.

What Basic does give you is unlimited courses and unlimited students, which is unusually generous. Many platforms cap products at the low end or meter active learners. Thinkific does neither.

The zero-platform-fee advantage

Thinkific takes no cut of your sales when you use Thinkific Payments. You pay ordinary card processing of roughly 2.9% plus 30 cents and that is the end of it.

Compare that with the common alternative: a cheaper monthly price with a percentage attached. A 7.5% platform fee on $3,000/month in sales is $225 — more than Thinkific’s entry plan and its middle tier combined.

So the real comparison is not sticker price. It is total cost at your actual revenue. Under a few hundred dollars a month in sales, a cheap plan with a fee usually wins. Once you are selling consistently, a flat monthly number wins and keeps winning. That is the whole argument in Teachable vs Thinkific.

One wrinkle worth knowing: if you route payments through your own external processor instead of Thinkific Payments, Thinkific applies a fee that shrinks as you move up tiers. Use their payments and it is zero.

What Thinkific does well

Teaching structure. This is the real product. Graded assignments, quizzes, completion certificates, prerequisites and live cohorts with unlimited sessions. If you teach a curriculum with a start date, an end date and people who need to demonstrate they learned something, Thinkific is built for you in a way most creator platforms are not.

Unlimited courses on the entry plan. If your strategy is a library of small courses rather than one flagship, no other mainstream platform gives you that much room this cheaply.

Stability and a clean student experience. The player is uncluttered, mobile behavior is solid, and the platform is boring in the way infrastructure should be. Launch-day traffic does not break it.

Site builder that is genuinely usable. Theme-based, not a blank canvas, but the templates look current and you can ship a decent course site without hiring anyone.

Communities included. One space on Basic, more higher up. Not a Skool or Circle replacement, but enough for course discussion without a second subscription.

Where Thinkific falls short

You pay before you know. The entry plan is not expensive, but it is a real bill starting on day 31 whether or not anyone has bought.

Email is functional, not marketing-grade. Announcements and simple sequences. No serious segmentation or behavioral automation. You will want a dedicated email platform by your second launch.

Branding stays until the top tier. Removing Thinkific’s marks requires the Grow plan. For a premium or corporate-facing offer, that is an expensive line to cross — LearnWorlds handles white-labeling far lower down, compared in Thinkific vs LearnWorlds.

Not a funnel builder. Sales pages, coupons and upsells exist but are basic. There is no real answer to order bumps, multi-step funnels and offer stacking. Creators who sell that way bolt on a dedicated cart — see our ThriveCart review.

No interactive video. Video plays; it does not branch, quiz inline, or respond. If engagement inside the lesson is your differentiator, this is the wrong platform.

Feature gating annoys people. Finding out that quizzes live one tier up, after you have built the course, is a bad afternoon. Check the tier table before you commit to a curriculum design.

Who should pick Thinkific

  • You are publishing several courses, not one, and you want unlimited products cheaply.
  • You teach in cohorts, with assignments, quizzes and certificates.
  • You already sell consistently and want a flat cost with no percentage skimmed off growth.
  • You want a stable platform you can stop thinking about.
  • You would rather run email and funnels on specialist tools and keep the course platform focused.

Start a Thinkific trial and build one full course inside the 30 days. That is the honest test.

Who should skip it

  • You have not sold anything yet and need fixed costs at zero while you find out.
  • You sell one course plus coaching and want the cheapest possible entry — Teachable is cheaper to start, with a transaction fee attached.
  • White-label branding matters and the top tier is out of budget.
  • Your business runs on multi-step funnels, order bumps and upsells.
  • Community engagement is the core product.

FAQ

Does Thinkific still have a free plan?

No. The free forever tier was retired and replaced with a 30-day trial of the paid plans, with no credit card needed to begin. Any guide telling you otherwise is out of date.

Does Thinkific take a percentage of my course sales?

Not when you use Thinkific Payments. You pay only card processing, roughly 2.9% plus 30 cents on US cards. If you route payments through an external processor instead, Thinkific applies a fee that decreases on higher tiers.

Are quizzes and certificates on the cheapest plan?

No, and this surprises people. Quizzes, graded assignments, certificates, memberships and payment plans start on the middle tier. The entry plan gives you unlimited courses and students but not assessment features.

Thinkific or Kajabi?

Thinkific is a better teaching platform for less money. Kajabi replaces more of your stack — email, funnels, a branded app — at a much higher price. If you want the best course delivery, Thinkific. If you want to cancel four subscriptions, look at our Kajabi review.

Our verdict

Thinkific is the sensible choice for someone who already knows their course sells and wants growth to stay untaxed. Losing the free plan cost it the beginner recommendation, and it did not lose much else.

Pick your tier by the features you actually need, not by the lowest price. If quizzes and certificates are part of the promise you make to students, budget for the middle tier from the start. Then open a Thinkific trial, build the full course inside 30 days, and launch before the first invoice lands.
